Colorful Anhui Folklore
Anhui is a land of fascinating scenery with a galaxy of talents and rich folklore of long standing.
South Anhui is dotted with fascinating historic and cultural relics. The folklore here is also distinctive, such as the marvelous "Garret Raising", Zhongkui Dance and Dragon Dance during seasonal celebrations, the interesting "Embroidery Ball Cast", "Crying Upon Being Givern Away", "Carrying the Bride" at weddings, the elegant Huizhou Tea Culture and the unique local operas put on in ancestral halls. The peculiar Nuo Opera in Guichi, handed down from ancient times, is a true preservation of ancient Chinese operas.
Central Anhui boasts the world-famous Flower Drum and Lanter Dance and Huangmei Opera, Lu Opera, and the yearly memorial ceremony for Bao Zheng, Poetry Recitation Festival and Bean Curd Cultural Festival.
North Anhui is a vast expanse of fertiale land. Its folklore has a straight-forward style. The games of cockfighting and quailfighting, the folk papercutting art and the folk musical instrument are characteristics of north Anhui.
