Colorful Anhui Folklore
Anhui is a land of fascinating scenery with a galaxy
of talents and rich folklore of long standing.
South Anhui is dotted with fascinating historic and cultural
relics. The folklore here is also distinctive, such as the
marvelous "Garret Raising", Zhongkui Dance and Dragon
Dance during seasonal celebrations, the interesting
"Embroidery Ball Cast", "Crying Upon Being Givern Away",
"Carrying the Bride" at weddings, the elegant Huizhou Tea
Culture and the unique local operas put on in ancestral
halls. The peculiar Nuo Opera in Guichi, handed down from
ancient times, is a true preservation of ancient Chinese
operas.
Central Anhui boasts the world-famous Flower Drum and Lanter
Dance and Huangmei Opera, Lu Opera, and the yearly
memorial ceremony for Bao Zheng, Poetry Recitation
Festival and Bean Curd Cultural Festival.
North Anhui is a vast expanse of fertiale land. Its folklore
has a straight-forward style. The games of cockfighting
and quailfighting, the folk papercutting art and the folk
musical instrument are characteristics of north Anhui.
